Joseph Addai dominated touches last year (270 touches) in comparison to Donald Brown (only 89), but is this going to be Parker/Mendenhall all over again?

Addai posted his second season with under 4.0 YPC and an abysmal 6.6 YPR after averaging over eight yards / catch in his first three seasons.  Addai's best season (his first) as a rusher had him in a timeshare with Rhodes.  Last year, much like his second, had him in in the Top 10 mostly due to 10+ trips to the end zone.

Is it time to go after Donald Brown?

Yes, for sure. Before he got hurt, Brown was by far the more dynamic back. I suspect he never got fully healthy because I'm surprised he never regained a more prominent role; the Colts offense had a different pace and feel when Brown was playing almost equal snaps early in the year.

Addai is a compiler whose value comes from receptions and, like you say, TDs. Brown's turn may not come early in 2010, but down the stretch and beyond, he'll be the man in Indy.
I'd certainly go after him, especially now before midnight strikes for Addai and becomes the pumpkin to Brown's Cinderella. Addai is strictly a beneficiary of situation not talent. Will be very interesting to see what a talented RB can do with it.
I love D.Brown but I rate Addai very low. But at this point the best Brown can hope for next season is 50% of carries and with the colts that aint that much
Being an Addai owner for the past 2 years, i'm agreeing completely with the others on going after Brown now. Addai has no razzle dazzle left and if the Super Bowl Losers jinx really does comes down on the Colts next year, Addai will be hit hard - Addai never got hurt last year which leaves me to believe he's a prime candidate to miss time next season, and then we will see D.Brown become the D.Brown all have been calling for since his arrival in Indy.
Addai was never really anything special.....but neither is Brown in my opinion...

The Colts havent really sought after a solid RB since Edgerrin James and Marshall Faulk. Its been the Peyton Manning show ever since Edge left.

I think Addai will continue to get the bulk of the carries/goal line touches, and be an ok RB2 option in PPR leagues for at least the next year or two..
Absolutely DBrown in the future in Indy. However, he MUST improve his pass blocking or he will not get the opportunity that his running skills deserve. If you can't protect Peyton properly, you won't see the field much in Indianapolis. I for one believe that DBrown will improve that aspect of his game and become the rushing leader for the Colts next year.
The number of touches will be reversed as early as this season ... Brown becoming the present and the future.
I have Brown, but wasn't expecing much for another season or two. Addai is young still and Brown's average per carry is 3.6 on his first 78 attempts (I don't have his playoff stats in front of me - perhaps they were a little better - but so were Addai's).

I think I agree a lot with Gunslinger on this one that the bad running has more to do with the season by season degredation of the offensive line's run blocking skill. Otherwise Donald would have probably done a little better than 3.6 ypc when he got his chances.

Still, often times the running back gets the blame even if it is only partialy his fault. I do expect Donald Brown to get more touches this coming season since they really have nothing to lose with Addai running pretty poorly. I think we will know a lot more about Brown after 2010. I also think that if he misses more than a couple of games with injury again, that he will get replaced by another RB in 2011. He has (appears to have) a smallish frame and 2009 did nothing to dispel concerns about his durability.

EDIT: I did want to add that I do think Brown is more of a home run hitter than Addai as we saw on a couple of plays from him this season. Perhaps their running game is similarly unproductive, but Brown gets the nod in the passing game. All he really needs to do is show durability and learn how to block - which won't necessarily be that easy to do for him.
I believe Brown was drafted not to overtake Addai as "The Guy", but rather to be a supplemental back. Since Edge left, the Colts have used their running game sparingly, but effectively enough to keep defenses on their heels. None of their backs have been drafted to be THE GUY....but Addai has been the closest thing to THE GUY for them, and will continue to be until Brown improves on key aspects of his game.

Being able to catch wont be enough for Brown to overtake the bulk of the load from Addai, as Addai averages 40 catches a year (had 50 this year). For Brown to overtake Addai he will have to improve on FIRST pass protection, and SECOND outshining Addai in the run game -neither of which he has done very well. And though he may improve on one of those next year, he will need to improve on both in order to outright overtake Addai next year, and I dont see that happening. So I think it will continue to be a RBBC with Addai getting the bulk (55-65%) until Brown proves he can be better than Addai all around - which wont happen right away, it at all in my opinion. Indy's running game has only been supplemental since Edge left, and it will continue to be that way until the Peyton Manning show is close to over.

So I conclude that even when Brown eventually starts to get more carries the Colts will always use him as just a supplement like Rhodes, Addai, and he has been thus far...hence his upside, as well as any other colts rb's upside, will remain supplemental.

Acquiring Brown seems to be a smart move, and you have to give him the benefit of the doubt somewhat after he was injured last season and never really got into stride, but I'm reluctant to trade for any Colts RB right now. I'm not an Addai fan at all, but Brown doesn't exactly thrill me. As always, it depends what his owners are asking for him.
a few weeks ago, i traded away ryan grant straight up for brown. i don't think grant will score as many fantasy points in a season again than he did this past year. brown has a great center of gravity and has a very unique running style. i just like watching the guy play football. i see him taking over for addai sooner than later.
No it's not the time to go after Brown. He didn't do anything that suggests he is better than Addai at this point and time. His apc was actually lower than Addai's. The perception is that he is better than Addai but the stats don't support it.

Like last season, Brown will probably be drafted ahead of Addai again. There is no value in it. I would rather wait a couple of rounds later and pick up Addai. Not that I want Addai.
