Custom Team Evaluations and Strategies

This section of DynastyGuys is devoted to customized team evaluations of our members' Dynasty teams. Honest evaluations, second opinions and even some trade suggestions that helps you be proactive in finding ways to improve your team are all included. Check out our very first one as an example of what we're describing:

05/10/10: An Example Custom Team Evaluation, by Peter Hodes, Dynastyguys Staff

These fantastic analysis articles are the result of the hard work of staff member Peter Hodes' tireless efforts. As anyone can tell just by reading one of these, they take quite a while to put together. Peter has graciously offered to do several of these a week for DynastyGuys members, but before I let that horse out of the barn I have to temper expectations a little with a few ground rules.

Last I checked, Peter is human, so for now we're going to let him figure out his own pace with these articles so as to not exhaust both him and his knowledge. That's why we will limit these analysis articles to five (5) per week - maximum. After a few weeks of these we will better be able to gauge how many more (if any) per week Peter can handle. Just keep that in mind when asking for this free advice that Peter is basically volunteering his help towards your Dynasty efforts and experience with these great write-ups.

So with all of that said, please leave your team and league link in a comment to this article for Peter to check and he will manage his write-ups at his own pace. We will include links to some team write-ups as they get authored by Peter which may assist other owners with their own team evaluations. Here's Peter's detailed instructions as to what to include:

INSTRUCTIONS:
Please submit your question with the scoring, league info, starting lineup and roster for your team and the team(s) you want to discuss in the format listed below. This is important because the easier you make it for me, the better I can help you. The limit to the amount of possible trade partners is 2 teams. Please list the rosters of the 1 or 2 teams you want me to focus on when thinking about trade ideas in addition to any other relevant information about those teams such as previous recent trade discussions and where they currently stand as well as known player preferences of those owners. You can ask follow up questions about 1 or 2 more teams at a time.

If you have any follow-up questions or comments about your writeup, please post them on the specific write-up page and not this main page so I can keep everything more organized. The main page comments section is crowded and things can get lost on this page. I will try to check in on your specific write-up page to help with follow-up questions.

Much can be learned by reading a good analysis of another team, so take that free advice and run with it. Please enjoy this new feature and we hope that this helps you and your Dynasty team(s).

Hi Jake - I'm not sure if the writeups are going to continue.  I am talking to Jeff about it and will let you guys know.

Are we continuing with this service again this season? I would love to submit a team if possible.

Joe, I just posted my thoughts on the original strategy writeup page for this team. Feel free to ask any follow up questions and I will do my best to help.

Just a few comments and quick ideas would be fine. I know this week would our WW and trade deadline ends before the Thursday night game. Thanks again.
Peter Hodes Comment by Peter Hodes on December 1, 2010 at 12:58am
Hi Joe, I'm glad your team has done well this year. I will be happy to take a look and try to come up with some ideas. I can do another complete writeup, which I can post on a new page, or I can just take a quick look and try to think of a few ideas, and I will post my comments on your original strategy writeup page. Please let me know what you would prefer. It will take a while to do another writeup but I can try to take a quick look tomorrow or Thursday and get back to you quicker if you just want some comments and a few ideas.

Hi Peter, Well the initial team I showed you worked out pretty good it is sitting at 9-3 and has had 6 total weeks of high score payouts. I lead the league in points and am locked in for the playoffs. I would like you to look at where it stands and add in any opinions on tweaking it for the playoffs or chipping off the "fat" and adding on more "muscle". I would like to have this Deathstar fully operational for the playoffs.
Here is the link again. Thanks. http://www.rtsports.com/fantasy-football-league/71223

You can keep players indefinitely. The salaries change year after year based on a fantasy site we use. Really no re-draft. I have a tendency to trade draft picks for known commodities since my team tends to score high points. However, I received the 3rd most points in the regular season, yet I had the #1 points against me and so I finished 5-9. That's why we play the games.
Peter Hodes Comment by Peter Hodes on August 25, 2010 at 11:48pm
That's a really bad offer.

How long can you keep players? Does their salary change year after year or can you keep players indefinitely at that salary or is it somewhere in between? I am wondering how much of a dynasty vs. redraft perspective I need to take when evaluating players and thinking about trades.
Joe Turck Comment by Joe Turck on August 25, 2010 at 8:57pm
I was offered the overall #30 for Stafford and I asked the person "If Stafford was in the free agent/rookie draft you feel he would fall all the way to 30?" the guy then countered with "Good point."

Joe - sorry it's taken me some time to get this going. I had that important meeting today and overall it was a long week but I can now put more time into it and will get it to you as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience. Please let me know if anything has changed as far as trade talks that I need to take into account in your write-up.
Peter Hodes Comment by Peter Hodes on August 23, 2010 at 7:42pm
Joe - I have an important meeting on Wednesday and need the time to prepare. I will get to your write-up after that. Sorry for the delay, but it will get done soon.
Joe Turck Comment by Joe Turck on August 22, 2010 at 1:54pm
No salary cap hits. The salary cap hit was setup more for no one to hoard the best players. Thank you.
Peter Hodes Comment by Peter Hodes on August 21, 2010 at 6:12pm
Joe - interesting league. I will work on your write-up this weekend/week. One quick initial question - can you drop players without incurring a salary cap hit? Fargas, for example, is someone I don't think is worth a roster spot in a 12 team league with rosters this size so it would be good to be able to drop him for a more interesting/higher upside player.
Joe Turck Comment by Joe Turck on August 20, 2010 at 9:58pm
Hi Peter. This is a 12 team, dynasty league.

Scoring is 1 PT for 20 YPP, 1PT for 10 YR/R, 3 for PASS TD, 6 for RU/RE TD, 6 TD/STTD , 2 for INT, 1 for sack, 2 for FR, 10.0 bonus points for shutout, 7.0 point(s) for 2 to 5 points allowed, 5.0 point(s) for 6 to 10 points allowed, 3.0 point(s) for 11 to 15 points allowed, 1.0 point(s) for 16 to 19 points allowed. Kickers 1 PAT, 3 PT for 39 and below, 40-49 for 4 PT and 50 and above 5 PT. No Negative points. You can double dip kickoff returns as DEF/ST and that player if you have one or the other (i.e. CHI gets TD and so does Hester).

Minimum/Maximum is 17 players and 2 TD/ST. Must have minimum 2 QB's, 2 RB's, 3 WR, 2TE's, 2 K and 2 (and MAX) TD/ST. 2 IR positions and we have a flex player specific to the HOME team on a given week and only to that position (ie QB on QB and you receive the better of the 2 points). We also have a salary cap of $27,500 and I am under right now by $490. Okay here is my roster:

Jake - I have finished your writeup. I think there are other teams who could be good trade partners than the ones I mentioned so feel free to ask follow up questions. Here is the link: http://www.dynastyguys.com/page/strategy-writeup-for-jake-the-1

Jake - still working on yours. I will have it this weekend. Let me know if anything has changed or you have any specific trade offers on the table and I can help with that as well.
Jake the Snake Comment by Jake the Snake on August 8, 2010 at 11:32pm
Peter, thanks for taking the time to address my 2nd dynasty team.

Link to my league:
http://www17.myfantasyleague.com/2010/home/62148#0

Scoring:
PPR, 6 pts all td's, standard yardage, ppr is slightly different in being RB's get 0.5 pts for rec, WR's get 1 pt and TE's get 1.5 pts per rec

League Info and starting lineup:
12 team league, 26 player rosters, 10 players starting lineup
1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB, WR or TE),1 K and 1 Team D

My Team:

QB: Matt Moore, Campbell, Bradford and John Skelton
RB: Gore, Turner, Spiller, Arian Foster, Sproles, Snelling, Coffee and Ryan Torrain
WR: Wayne, Garcon, Aromashadu, Owens, Devery Henderson, LaFell, Arellious Benn, Davone Bess and Deon Butler
TE: JerMichael Finley and Fred Davis
K: Vinatieri
D: Packers and Saints

Obviously, quarterback (so ugly I know but I waited and waited) is my biggest area of need but the other owners keep offering me an average qb like McNabb or Eli and a player for Finley. I won't give up Finley for a guy like that. Wideout is pretty average too with two Indy guys (didn't plan on that but couldn't pass on both guys where I took them) and not much else.

This is the first year of the league so no future picks are set as of this time.

Thanks for your help.

Jake - I am happy to help with additional teams/leagues as well as any follow up discussions on the league I already wrote-up.

Phil - You're welcome. If you have any follow up questions or want to discuss current trade offers please feel free to post them on your write-up page. I receive emails notifying me of a new comment (most of the time - doesn't seem to be working the past couple of days, though).
